My approach to speaking

Frank Beard speaking at NATSO Connect
Frank Beard, speaking at NATSO Connect

I speak as an independent voice. Not as a vendor with something to sell, not as a consultant trying to win new clients, and definitely not as someone who’s afraid to say what I think.

I believe it’s my job to respect the time the audience gives me. That’s why I build every presentation from scratch, tailored specifically for the audience and designed to be memorable. I don’t recycle presentations, even when I’ve previously spoken on the same topic.

My perspective comes from having visited thousands of convenience stores, working with leading retail tech companies, and looking at everything through the lens of what actually matters to customers.

If you’re looking for a speaker who will do something different, let’s talk.

Recent presentations

My presentations focus primarily on retail trends, technology, and examples of innovation in convenience retailing and cross-channel verticals. A few recent examples:

Distraction or disruption?

Every few years, retailers are warned of obsolescence if they ignore the latest trend or technology. Whether it’s autonomous retail, ultrafast delivery, or more recently, fears about falling behind on AI or agentic commerce, we’ve all heard the hype. But how do you tell the difference between disruptions and distractions?

What does today’s customer actually want?

There’s a lot of hype about what customers are looking for, and there’s no shortage of trend decks claiming everything has changed. But people don’t actually change that much. We’re still looking for solutions to the same fundamental human problems that have existed for centuries. How can retailers cut through the noise, the sales pitches, and focus on what people actually want?

What can retailers learn from international markets?

Foodservice remains an emerging category for America’s convenience stores. Despite decades of evolution, there’s no consensus on what it looks like at scale. Despite a few early innovators, many retailers are just getting started. And yet, the question of how to become a destination for food has already been answered for decades in some international markets like Japan. What can American retailers learn from their counterparts overseas, and how can they use it to make their stores destinations in their own right?

Presentation formats

Keynotes

Presentations ranging from 30 to 60 minutes long, custom-built for the audience and tailored to the needs of each specific conference or event.

Panel discussions

Featured guest or moderator. I prepare seriously for both, especially when moderating. I take pride in building panels with the right people at the right retailers, who are willing to speak openly and honestly about whatever is being discussed.

Workshops and private sessions

Whether solo or alongside trusted independent voices from my network, I work with small groups and corporate teams who want to stay close to what’s actually happening in the market. I particularly enjoy two-way conversations where both parties share their views on specific trends.

Podcasts and webinars

Long-form audio conversations are one of my favorite formats. If you have a podcast or webinar and want the conversation to go somewhere real, I’d love to be a part of it.
