Most vendors and suppliers in this industry struggle with B2B marketing. They build great products, but then wonder why those products never earn the attention and reputation they deserve.

The problem is they didn’t fully invest in how to talk about what they built.

Where vendors get stuck

Startups without marketing teams

Companies that have intentionally kept headcount low and don’t need a full-time marketer. They’ve offloaded elements of marketing to a founder or whoever has bandwidth. It’s not bad enough that it hurts them, but nor is it good enough to stand out. They need a senior marketer on a fractional or retainer basis who can raise the bar and capitalize on opportunities that they weren’t aware of.

Startups with marketing teams that don’t know the industry

Companies with capable marketers who unfortunately don’t understand fuel and convenience. They’re producing a lot, but very little of it is resonating with retailers. They need guidance from a senior marketer who understands both the craft of marketing and the realities of this industry.

High-growth startups expanding into fuel and convenience

Companies that come from adjacent verticals but underestimate how different fuel and convenience retailing can be. They move quickly before understanding how credibility, influence, and industry relationships are built. Many overspend on the wrong things and need guidance from a senior marketer who understands the industry.

Established companies whose marketing undersells the business

Companies with good products and customers, but with marketing that limits their growth potential. They might pay for large booths at trade shows but get minimal coverage from trade press, or their messaging may not resonate with prospects as much as they wish it did. They need a senior marketer on a fractional or retainer basis to build the right systems, coach the existing team, and build towards a handoff that leaves everyone in a stronger position.

Organizations relying on traditional PR firms

Vendors, associations, and others who have invested in support from traditional public relations firms, only to discover that generic expertise isn’t the same as industry expertise. The result is unimpressive results and a sense of missed opportunities. These organizations need assistance from someone who knows what to say and why, and who has already successfully done B2B public relations work for dozens of retailers and startups.

How we can work together

Every company has different needs. My goal is to find an arrangement that works for both sides, not to push the same engagement structure on everyone.

Fractional engagements

For companies that need senior marketing leadership embedded into the business. I take on a fractional CMO or VP of Marketing role, own the vertical for fuel and convenience, and get the marketing where it needs to be. The goal is to work towards a handoff point where I leave the team in a stronger position than I found them.

Retainer engagements

For companies with an ongoing need that doesn’t require the depth or workload of a fractional engagement. We define what the work looks like—typically PR, reports, case studies, or other recurring marketing functions—and I deliver against those needs on a monthly basis.

Advisory engagements

For founders and executives who want an outside voice that won’t just tell them what they want to hear. We meet on a regular cadence to work through positioning, strategy, branding, event management, and other topics specific to your company. You’re hiring me for my perspective in this arrangement, not output.

Project engagements

For companies that need specific work done well, with a defined scope and a clear endpoint. This might mean case studies, PR campaigns, positioning work, brand strategy, product launches—or other projects. Unlike many senior marketers, I’m a doer rather than just a delegator. I can build and guide teams at the same time.

Speaking engagements

Over the past decade, I’ve delivered presentations and moderated panels at dozens of industry conferences, private company meetings, and trade events—both in the US and internationally.

Retail study tours

I’ve visited thousands of convenience stores across the United States. I know what’s worth seeing, what isn’t, and where to find the stores that most outside groups would never think to visit.

I organize tours ranging from one-day events to weeklong road trips, tailored specifically to the needs of each group. My work has primarily focused on international groups visiting the US, but I also work with US-based groups who want exposure to innovation in other markets.

How I work

Konbini Strategy is built around four values: craft, standards, honesty, and discipline. They’re the principles that guide how I approach my work and help keep me anchored when shortcuts, compromises, and distractions inevitably appear.

I’ve written about what each of these values means, and why they’ve come to matter so much to me over the course of my career.
